"These are the latest in a series of oil paintings that I have completed  in 2007-2008. The main theme is the historic signage that is all around us. All paintings are on stretched canvas and painted in the traditional old master painting method of a gradual buildup of layers of paint to achieve the desired value and color. When the painting is complete it is glazed with a thin layer of retouch varnish and 6 months later a final varnish is applied. These works are time intensive and a labor of love." MOXIE CLUBMoxie Bar and Restaurant was started by Jeff Mason after he sold the DNA Lounge. The restaurant lounge was a concept perhaps a bit before its time - Nouvelle Yiddish cuisine - house cured pickles and pastrami, brisket, kasha and varnishkes - all organic, local, and good.
The restaurant was located kitty-corner from the backside of Project Artaud - a skeevy neighborhood before all of the dot.commers came. This painting was completed in March 2008

Whiz Burger
I have no idea how long Whiz Burgers has been in business, but carbon testing dated the cool old-style menu back to at least the late '60's. Then there's the yellow around the menu, the kind of thing today's interior designers can't seem to pull off with any integrity, and the nostalgic (although sticky) picnic tables out front. They don't make places like Whiz Burgers anymore. Painting Completed in Aug 2007.

 IN –N- OUT BURGERS
In 1948, the first In-N-Out Burger was founded by Harry and Esther Snyder in Baldwin Park. Harry's idea of a drive-thru hamburger stand where customers could order through a two-way speaker box was quite unique. Though times have changed, little has changed at In-N-Out. The menu-burgers, fries and drinks-is still the same basic menu customers have enjoyed since 1948. Everything is still made fresh to order. This is the Fishermans Wharf  location and was painted in Feb 2008.
